Measurements In Audio – Interviews With Pass, Jones, Watts, Qvortrup & More

Audio Measurements

Audio Measurements tends to be one of those perennial conversations in HiFi. Along with discussions about cables, the online comment sections tend to buzz fairly constantly on the subject. This week on pt.AUDIO’s The Occasional Podcast, the audio-centric show digs into the vaults to aggregate some important insights from the product development side of high fidelity.

Pulled from conversations over 12 seasons of interviews Peter Qvortrup of Audio Note UK, Andrew Jones of MoFi, Nelson Pass Of Pass Labs and First Watt, Axel Grell from Sennheiser, Bill Dudleston from Legacy Audio, Rob Watts Of Chord and Peter Comaeu of Quad and Wharfedale express some opinions and observations about their use of measurements. The results are enlightening. The technicality of measurements overlaps with product development in interesting ways, and each individual’s approach helps define their outcomes in some way. To be clear, not one amp, speaker or source designer has ever claimed NOT to use measurements in some form of R&D, but to what degree they lean into the information appears to vary some from interview to interview.

The Occasional Podcast recently did a series on the “Best Of” for Speakers, Amps, Turntables and Carts, discussed the future of the CD, the idea that the term “Yacht Rock” might be offensive to some, interviewed Stereophile’s Michael Trei, covered AXPONA 2025The Best Vintage Amplifiers To Buy At A Garage Sale, interviewed Jason Stoddard of Schiit Audio, and covered the future of digital and class D with Michal Jurewicz of Mytek and High End Munich 2024, but previous episodes include how tos, tips, tricks and education in all things high fidelity audio from episodes like last week’s Hot Headphones For The Holidaysan Interview With John DevoreMeasurements explained with Andrew Jones3 things to know about streaming audio5 things to consider when buying a tube amplifier, interviews with Steve Guttenberg, how to’s and more from audio’s greatest talents, including Michael Fremer, another interesting conversation about the History Of The BBC’s LS3/5a Loudspeaker,  A Beginner’s Guide To Tube Amplifiers and A View From The Booth: Reference Systems, Accuracy & Why Audiophiles Love Jazz So Much: including rare interview with the late audio legend engineer Al Schmitt.
