MoFi Electronics And Andrew Jones Introduce The SourcePoint 10 Loudspeaker
The Occasional Podcast has been teasing a new Andrew Jones speaker since AXPONA this year. This weekend the veil has been lifted on his debut entry into the market with technical details and more, just in time for Capital Audiofest in DC. The new MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 10 is a ten inch concentric two-way monitor that can be finished in black or walnut and retails for $3,699 in the US.
We actually got a chance to swing by the design offices of Andrew Jones in Beverly Hills (90211 – to be exact) and hear the new model in person. Now, our listening session was just some initial impressions in an unfamiliar space, but Jones did an outstanding job putting together a well treated room which sounded great without being too “dead”. Still, official observations will have to wait until we can get a review sample back in the Audio-Head lab. What were heard on site however, was impressive.
The new MoFi SourcePoint 10 also a little bit different than the usual audiophile fare in many ways. While Andrew is no stranger to concentric driver designs, a 10 inch paper cone with a mounted silk dome tweeter lands pretty far off the beaten path for mainstream speaker designs in this price point, and pulling it together was not without its challenges according to Jones. He appears on The Occasional Podcast this week in a special launch day interview spilling all the details, about the speaker, his thoughts on bracing, material choice and even his general philosophies when it comes to pushing speaker design in a forward direction.
In Jones’ listening space, the MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 10 stands in a fairly robust footprint for a studio monitor. I’ve seen larger, but as you might observe from the photos, it is a bit bigger than your classic LS3/5a or Harbeth equivalent. In terms of external looks, the front baffle shape is really a great nod to a sense of modern design, while the “mostly” square walnut box hits at vintage roots (its actually just slightly slanted toward the back). A great look in my opinion, and the matching grill looks fantastic as well when applied to the front.
Acoustically, Jones had both the speaker and room tuned into to exceptionally flat response, with solid, tight bass – my favorite flavor. The two way design never faltered when playing rock, or even my request curveball of dubstep and Billie Ellish’s Bad Guy (check out the breakdown at the end). Imaging was also (eh hem) on point with an ultra focused instrument separation and left-right-center diversity when playing Andrew’s choice Chocolate Chip Trip by Tool. Andrew has never been short on interesting and sometimes surprising demo tracks when showing off his gear. Because of the concentric nature of the drivers, the MoFi SourcePoint 10 can actually be mounted upright or on its side with no change in performance.
Again, I was in Jones’ playground with his pretty much unlimited time to tweak the room with the MoFi SourcePoint 10, but there were very impressive results from what I heard. The front end on active display consisted of gear MoFi distributes, including a Rose Streamer and the RA180 integrated.
