The New Schiit Lyr 5 Can Do Both Solid State And Tube Amplification

Schiit Audio has announced the Lyr 5, a new desktop headphone amplifier that introduces the company’s Forkbeard system to its headphone amp lineup. Available now starting at $799, the Lyr 5 combines tube and solid-state operation with a range of monitoring and control features aimed at providing greater system visibility and flexibility.
At its core, the Lyr 5 is a hybrid design offering both tube and solid-state gain modes. Schiit’s implementation, referred to as Coherence, allows users to switch between the two without changing the overall circuit topology. Instead of rerouting the signal through entirely different paths, the amplifier swaps the gain device itself—using either a vacuum tube or depletion-mode MOSFETs designed to emulate tube behavior. When operating in solid-state mode, the tube is fully powered down, which may help extend its lifespan.
The amplifier delivers up to 6 watts of output power and includes both 1/4-inch and 4.4mm headphone outputs. It also incorporates Schiit’s Continuity A output stage and a relay-based stepped volume control, both of which are intended to maintain consistent performance across a range of listening levels.
A key addition is integration with Schiit’s Forkbeard platform, which enables app-based monitoring and control via iOS or Android devices. Through Forkbeard, users can view real-time operating conditions, including whether the amplifier is running in Class A or Class AB, as well as how close it is to its performance limits. When paired with other Forkbeard-enabled components, such as Schiit DACs, the system can provide expanded functionality, including parametric EQ and a feature called Visual Volume that indicates volume ranges where clipping may occur.
The Lyr 5 also includes built-in protections for current, temperature, and DC conditions, managed by an onboard microprocessor. The unit ships with a tube and the Forkbeard module, allowing for immediate setup.
With its combination of hybrid amplification, monitoring tools, and modular system integration, the Lyr 5 represents a continuation of Schiit’s approach to compact, feature-rich desktop audio components. It’s a pretty innovative feature set for a product category that at first glance may appear fairly simple. Lyr 5 is priced at $799 in black finish and $829 in silver.
