Sonus Faber Adds The Gravis III Subwoofer To The Round Out The Line

This week Sonus Faber unveiled the latest update to their sub line in form of the Gravis III Subwoofer. The active unit falls just underneath the current Gravis VI and V, and is intended to complement the recently launched Olympica Nova speaker line we have been drooling over since Rocky Mountain Audiofest last year.

The New Gravis III subwoofer connects to the Nova line aesthetically with black finish and leather on the sides, and either walnut or Wenge matte on the top panel. A removable fabric grill covers a 10″ Trilaminated sandwich cone driver. Aiming for both rigidity and low weight, the diaphragm includes a layer of honeycomb in-between the layers. Amplification comes courtesy of a Class AB 600W (into 8 ohms) and onboard DSP. There is a mobile app for setup and control, as well as self calibration. Wireless connectivity is even available when paired with an optional transmitter. A pretty cool option for those looking to reduce long runs of subwoofer wire around the listening room.

The McIntosh Group of brands (including Sonus Faber, McIntosh, Acoustic Research, and distribution for Pro-Ject in the US) is always delivering a steady stream of updates to their laundry list of products. In an interview CEO and President Jeff Poggi, Jeff discusses the delivery strategy and seasonality of the all of the gear collectively. Perhaps one of the largest collections of hifi under one roof, it appears that the staggered launches of each brand allows for and ebb and flow of investments, R&D and revenue which many smaller companies are not afforded. It’s a solid approach to global hifi, and the results allow for such a wide berth of tech, spec and innovation.

The new Sonus Faber Gravis III Subwoofer is out this week, available through SF’s dealer network. Retail price is $2,750 for interested parties in the United States.
