Salk Intros A New $10k Floorstander – The SS9.5

Salk SS9.5 speaker

A quick dive into Salk Signature Sound website will reveal a flushed out list of all the speakers the Michigan-based company has to offer, complete with pricing. What also becomes quickly apparent is how deep and well-covered every price point is along the product lines.

The floorstander category runs from $1,500 for the two-way Songbird, all the way up to $16k SS12 at 147 lbs. per cabinet. Wedged in between all that is the new SS9.5 at $10k for standard veneer. The woodwork it reduced to a mere 112 lbs. at this price tag and offers a three-way design with passive radiators to help with bass distribution.

Originally debuted at Chicago’s AXPONA audio show, the SS9.5 is the new flagship of the SS lineup. The high end of the frequency spectrum is controlled via a SB Acoustics Satori beryllium dome tweeter with a 4″ cone mid covering vocals, courtesy of AudioTechnology. Lows are delivered down to a promised 25Hz thanks to a 9.5″ Satori woofer also from SB Acoustics.

The new 9.5 was inspired by the success of the 3-way ported Salk Song3 BeAT ($4,495). Founder and designer Jim Salk notes, “we decided it was time to marry Satori’s phenomenal beryllium creation with AudioTechnology’s outstanding mid for a new flagship model.” While some might balk at the half-a-car price of the loudspeaker, many audiophiles deep into the hobby might argue that is where all the fun begins.

Small customization options are available in both the crossover and finish categories. Black and white colors will save you $400 and specialized veneers and automotive colors can be accommodated as well. More info: Salk Sound
